How To Wear… Thigh High Boots

by - Saturday, February 01, 2014

When worn correctly, thigh high boots can look sexy and stylish. However, it isn’t a look that’s as easy to achieve as it sounds. In fact, there’s a huge chance that you could end up looking like a Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman style hooker. If you want to avoid this potentially disastrous look, there are a few tips you can follow.

It’s all about the fit

Don’t think you have to stick to skin tight boots. The most modern styles come with a slouch design which can look really flattering. They are also a lot more comfortable to wear. They don’t look as overtly sexy as the skin tight versions and they can complement most outfits.

Another thing you have to consider is whether you have large calves. This can be a huge problem when it comes to taking the boots off. Therefore you should make sure the boots have an elasticated back if you do have a slightly larger calf.

Get a little inspiration

One of the best ways to figure out how thigh high boots should be worn is to look at pictures of your favourite stars. Search for pictures of stars such as Kate Moss and Miranda Kerr, they’re a great example of what kind of outfits go with the different types of boots.

Create your own look

There are a number of ways to make thigh high boots your own. Don’t feel you have to wear them in the traditional way. Try folding the tops of the boots over or maybe creating a slouch design by pulling them down a little. Find the look that works best for you and your individual style.

You don’t need to bare your legs

One surprising fashion item that knee high boots go well with is leggings. Women often think they have to wear a skirt or a dress when they’re wearing thigh boots. What they don’t realise is that they can even look great with jeans providing you get a wide fitting pair. There are no strict rules you have to follow.

Stick to darker colours

Darker coloured boots tend to have a more sophisticated look. While there are times lighter colours can look chic, it’s easier to get the look completely wrong when you stray from black or brown. Black thigh boots can also have a slimming effect which works well if you have larger legs.

Watch the heel

Hooker style boots are easy to spot as they tend to have ridiculously high heels. You don’t have to avoid a heel altogether, but make sure it’s not too obvious. You want to be able to walk in them, as well as look good.

If you follow the advice above you should end up with a chic, stylish look. Thigh high boots can be a little daunting, but they really don’t have to be. Above all else, avoid the boots that go all the way to the crotch. If you’re petite this is a particularly useful tip to follow.
