Home Sweet Home: Simple Ways to Make Your House Feel More Personal

by - Saturday, January 14, 2017

Do you ever walk into someone's house and you can just feel their personality pouring out of every room? There's just something about it that feels unique to them. Compare that to going to someone's house where it doesn't seem to have even the slightest bit of personality at all. It can make the whole house seem sterile and lifeless. It's hardly surprising which house most people would rather spend time in. The major question is, how do you achieve a home with that unique, personal quality? Well, the answer is actually a lot easier and simpler than a lot of people think. Here are just a few simple ways to make your house feel more like a home.

Make things

The easiest way to end up with a house that looks just like everyone else's is through buying all of the same things. We've all had that experience of walking into a room and it looking just like an Ikea showroom. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that. Buying decorations and household items is easy, convenient and guarantees you're going to at least get a degree of good design. But if you want a home that's really going to stand out then there's no better way to do that than to make things yourself. Whether it's crafts, art or furniture, there are things that anyone can make to bring an extra touch of personality into their homes. If you have kids then you can get them involved too by framing their favorite drawings and hanging them on the walls.

Shop in unusual places

Of course, not all of us have the time or energy to decorate our homes with homemade items. If you are going to buy things for your home, then try to steer clear of the obvious places. Instead look for slightly more unusual things. Thrift stores and independent retailers are great because they often have the inds of things that you'd never find in big chain superstores. If you're shopping online, then avoid places like Amazon and look for smaller sites. Plenty of people makes bespoke items that allow you to own something truly one-of-a-kind. Don't worry if they don't ship internationally. There are services that provide an address that the retailers deliver to and then they forward international mail directly to you!

Be creative with your colors

We're all taught that the best thing to do is to focus on neutral colors to avoid clashing. But hey, it's your home! You do whatever you feel like! Don't be afraid to get creative with the design of your home. If you to paint one of your rooms with bold, bright colors then you go ahead and do that! The worst that could happen is that you don't like it and you cover it in a different color. You've got nothing to lose by experimenting and you could end up with a wonderfully exciting, personal home.
