How to Combat Motion Sickness

Motion sickness can be a nightmare and often ruins any vacation you go on. Whether you or your children suffer with this condition, there are ways to overcome motion sickness or prevent it from occurring in the first place. Before your next vacation, here are a few ways that you can combat motion sickness.

Drive

If being in the car is when you feel at your worst, often a good solution to this is taking control and being the driver if possible. Driving not only distracts your brain, but it causes less motion sickness as you are in control of the car and, therefore, and when you turn. Your brain automatically knows when you are going to move, meaning you may not even experience motion sickness at all. If you can’t drive, make sure you’re sat in the passenger seat and focus on the horizon. Don’t read as this will make motion sickness worse, and always have a form of fresh air blowing into the car.

Be Careful What You Consume

Eating certain rich foods or drinking excessive alcohol before traveling could contribute to motion sickness. Be sure to watch what you consume the day before traveling, and try to stick to light, healthy foods. Any food that usually makes you feel a little “off” should be avoided. Smoking may also contribute to motion sickness, so try to avoid this or cut back before traveling.

Choose the Best Seats

There are certain places on an airplane or boat that are best to sit if you experience motion sickness. If you’re flying, book the middle airplane seats over the wing. This is the least turbulent part of the plane, so you should experience the least movement. If you’re experiencing motion sickness on a boat, in the lower cabins in the middle of the ship, you will feel the least movement. Be sure to keep away from anyone else with motion sickness as this could set off your own sickness.

Use Ginger

In a study published in 2000, ginger was found to be a great preventative measure for those who suffer with motion sickness. Whilst this may not be the case for everyone, it certainly won’t hurt to give it a go. Those who are on blood thinners may need to consult with their doctor before using ginger as a preventative measure. You can also purchase capsules and edible ginger sweets. Consume these 1-2 hours prior to travel.

Medicate

If nothing seems to work, your best option is to medicate. Pharmacy Online is an affordable online chemist that stocks many motion sickness medications to help calm your or your child’s sickness. These medications are safe to take and may combat your motion sickness. If these over-the-counter medications are not working, then it is best to speak to your doctor, who may be able to prescribe something stronger. They will also discuss any possible side effects with you before giving you the medication.

These tips may help you to combat your travel sickness. If not, speak to your doctor about an alternative.
